Seamless, smooth, and secure: In close collaboration with Deutsche Bahn, we actively supported and significantly advanced the design and implementation of a new CMS for Bahn.de. This system makes editorial work more flexible and intuitive while also improving usability for millions of travelers who use the tool to book journeys and access travel information. The result? An intuitive and scalable platform, more efficient editorial workflows at Deutsche Bahn, and a seamless experience for end customers.

THE CHALLENGE

Open-Heart Surgery

The starting point for the project was an outdated CMS used by Deutsche Bahn. There was a clear need for a more efficient system that would optimize editorial team workflows and provide a better customer experience.

On top of that came strict compliance requirements, making things even more complex: the new system had to meet high security standards while operating smoothly without any service interruptions. After all, millions of travelers used the platform every day.

What we did

A CMS That Transforms Workflows and User Journeys

We started with a comprehensive analysis, focusing on security issues, inefficient editorial workflows, and outdated functionalities to clearly define the core challenges of the existing CMS. The goal was to find a secure, measurable solution that would simplify editorial processes and enable customized features. Based on Deutsche Bahn’s requirements and objectives, we recommended implementing a modern CMS that is robust, flexible, and intuitive to use. This perfectly aligned with the goal of improving efficiency and building a future-proof system.

Once the right CMS was selected, our team tackled content migration and began transferring existing data and assets into the new system. We also restructured the site navigation and optimized the platform to simplify editorial workflows, improve user journeys, and enhance search functionality.

Additionally, we developed new features such as the Holiday Quick Finder based on a UX and usability analysis, as well as the “Current Traffic Updates” section. We also revised every template, component, and module on Bahn.de and its subpages. This included integrating video and survey modules to strengthen customer engagement.

How we did it

Sprints of Co-Creation

Over the course of numerous sprints and thousands of story points, our cross-functional teams worked closely together and side by side with the client. UX and development teams were also brought in to ensure smooth handovers and address issues quickly. Thanks to this close collaboration, we were able to solve challenges fast and keep downtime to a minimum. We weren’t simply a service provider – we worked hand in hand with the client, building a relationship based on trust and creating a sense of shared purpose. This strengthened our ambition to think beyond individual work steps and deliver real value at every stage of the migration process.

What we learned

Thanks to our close collaboration with Deutsche Bahn, we were able to align solving the technical challenges with building a highly functional platform. This experience once again demonstrated how important flexible CMS solutions and integrated user-defined features are to meet the constantly evolving demands of editorial teams and end consumers.
